David Leyton
Genesee County Prosecutor
David Leyton was first elected Genesee County Prosecutor in 2004. He was re-elected without opposition to his second term in 2008, third term in 2012, and fourth term in 2016. As Prosecutor, he is the chief law enforcement officer in Genesee County.
Prior to being elected Prosecutor, David served 12 years on the Flint Township Board of Trustees, serving first as trustee and later as clerk. Mr. Leyton is the Past President of the Prosecuting Attorney Association of Michigan. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Weiss Advocacy Center. He is also a past President of the Genesee County Bar Association.
On Friday nights in the late summer and fall, you can find David wearing stripes as a Michigan High School Athletic Association football official.
David and his wife, Therese, a health educator and columnist, reside in Flint Township. They have four children: Aimee (married to Alan Speck), Andrew, Erica, and Adam (married to Denise). They also have two granddaughters and a grandson.
Tamara Phillips
Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney
Prosecutor David Leyton appointed Tamara Phillips to the position of Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in April, 2017. Tammy has been an assistant prosecutor in the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office since 1997 and has experience in every division of the office serving most recently as the Manager of the Circuit Court Criminal Trial Division and Juvenile & Abuse Neglect Division. One of the office's top trial attorneys before taking on her management roles, Tammy has handled thousands of cases including murder, rape, and violent gang jury trials. She also instructs state and local prosecutors and police officers on the topics of sexual assault, domestic violence, and strangulation.
A graduate of Davison High School, Tammy received her undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and her law degree from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School. Tammy and her husband, Randy, reside in Davison with their daughter, Olivia.
John R Potbury
Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney
John Potbury was appointed Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in April 2017. Prior to his appointment, John served as Special Assistant Prosecuting Attorney since 2005. Born in Flint, John is a lifelong resident of Genesee County. A proud graduate of Flint Powers Catholic High School and the University of Michigan-Flint, John went on to graduate cum laude from Michigan State University College of Law. John has been actively involved in the greater Flint community for many years as a member of numerous community organizations and service clubs. His public service background includes being elected to the Flushing City Council and Mayor.
