The Genesee County Clerk/Register oversees four major divisions of the Clerk's office: Vital Records, Elections, Circuit Court Records and Register of Deeds.
The Vital Records Division consists of managing, storing, retrieving, and preserving birth, death and marriage records that occurred in Genesee County. Furthermore, marriage license applications, assumed names/DBA’s, concealed pistol licenses and notary applications are processed in our office.
The Elections Division oversees the administration of all federal, state and local elections in Genesee County; this encompasses the filing of nominating petitions, campaign finance, ballot production, accumulation of vote totals and election worker training.
The Legal Division handles the filing of new civil, domestic and criminal cases and maintains official records of all cases that come before the Genesee County 7th Circuit Court. The Clerk's office maintains a record of all proceedings in a computerized court database for cases filed 1979 to the present, collects fines and fees, receives and holds monies to be disbursed on order of the court for cases awaiting settlement. Most court files are public records, and are made available for public inspection in the Legal Division of the Clerk's Office.
Records maintained by the Register of Deeds include but are not limited to deeds, mortgages, liens, and other documents affecting real estate in Genesee County. The recording of your document in this office, does not make your document legal. It makes your document public. The Genesee County Register of Deeds’ duty is to record and index into a searchable database and to preserve these records and their integrity in a timely manner.
