Commissioner Omar A. Sims District 1
District 1 is the area in which Omar A. Sims was raised, educated (Flint and Beecher Community Schools) and currently represents. Sims is no novice to the political arena especially District 1. For over 25 years, Sims has been a catalyst in this community revitalization effort. He has worked on numerous political campaigns in this community where he was able to influence public policy and safety for Genesee County residents. It was under the leadership of Flint’s 1st Black elected Mayor James Sharp, that Sims played a pivotal role in getting sidewalk paving on Carpenter Road for Northwestern students and enhancing Mass Transportation Authority bus routes to meet the needs of riders.
Sims is a proud graduate and participant of the following; Honors Graduate of Flint Northwestern High School (4 years Class Officer); Graduate of Grambling State University with a Bachelor Degree in Public Administration (elected Freshman Class President, Student Union Board Vice President and twice elected as Student Union Board President); Graduate of Michigan State University Political Leadership Program; Graduate of National Center for Community Education; Honors Graduate of Cornerstone University with a Master’s Degree in Management.
After years of laying the foundation groundwork with community programs, Sims had the challenging experience of being elected Flint City Councilman representing the 1st Ward (1997-2001). This highly visible position of service granted him the opportunity to network, problem solve and facilitate the procurement of funds and other resources for the people of Genesee County.
Currently some of Sims community and civic activities include: Board Member of Youth Leadership Institute Incorporated, Mentor and Advisor with Alpha Esquires a Youth Mentoring group sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Life Member of Grambling State University National Alumni Association, Member of Kingdom of Heaven Ministries, Board Member of 100 Black Men of Flint, Board Member Black Americas for Life and Parent Volunteer Flint Area Football Youth League.
